Empowering Rural Women Farmers: A Case Study from B. Karuabahal Village

Empowering Rural Women Farmers: A Case Study from B. Karuabahal Village

In the heart of Balisankara block lies B. Karuabahal, a village known for its blend of Hindu and Christian communities, alongside Scheduled Tribes and Castes. With agriculture as the primary source of income supplemented by poultry and goat rearing, this community of 1999 members across 533 families embodies resilience amidst challenges.

Despite government provisions, neglect persists due to the unsuitability of a significant portion of farming lands for cultivation. Out of 2845 acres, only 1400 acres are cultivable, with irrigation available for a mere 22.3 acres. However, hope flickered to life in June 2021 with the initiation of the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) project by SEWAK, aiming to uplift 3000 women farmers, including those from B. Karuabahal.

The project commenced with 37 women, gradually swelling to 60, under the guidance of SEWAK’s APC team. In collaboration with ITDA and the Horticulture department, the project embraced the OMBADC scheme to train farmers in cultivating high-value crops like Potato, Brinjal, Chilli, Mustard seeds, and Cabbage. Notably, ten women from Rohidaspara, B. Karuabahal, cultivated cauliflower across 10 acres, marking a significant leap towards economic empowerment. These women, including Indumati, Sindhu, Jasoda, Premshila, Sushila, Savitri, Sushmita, Gura, Geeta, and Reema Rohidas, epitomize the spirit of transformation within the community.

SEWAK’s APC team conducted training programs, fostering proficiency in innovative agricultural techniques such as handi khata, jibamruta, and uplift nursery, empowering women with newfound skills and knowledge. Market linkage became a priority, with a fixed production rate enabling farmers to engage with traders effectively.

The results were tangible. Through collaboration with FPO’s Cheddlagan, the Bharati PG Group, for the third consecutive time, sold 837 kgs of cauliflower, reaping rewards of Rs. 18,425. Their perseverance paid off handsomely as they earned Rs. 1,30,925 from 48.37 quintals, with the potential to double their income. Moreover, projections indicate a profit of Rs. 2,05,925 from 10 acres of land, painting a promising future for these enterprising women.

Gratitude flowed towards the APC team, igniting a renewed sense of determination among the villagers to maximize their agricultural potential. They pledged to work unitedly, harnessing enthusiasm to amplify their production and yield.

Financial transparency underpinned their success. With meticulous accounting, the approximate expenditure for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides stood at Rs. 80,000-85,000 for 10 acres. Deducting input costs, a net profit of Rs. 1,20,925 emerged, validating the viability of their endeavors.

The story of B. Karuabahal Village is not just about agricultural transformation; it symbolizes women’s empowerment and community resilience. Through concerted efforts and innovative initiatives, SEWAK, in partnership with government agencies, has sown the seeds of change, fostering sustainable livelihoods and economic prosperity in rural India.

APC, SEWAK, Balisankara, Sundargarh, serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a brighter, more equitable future for all.
