Empowering Women’s Leadership: The Journey of San-Dhabakhol Village

Empowering Women’s Leadership: The Journey of San-Dhabakhol Village

San-Dhabakhol village, nestled within the Ratanpur Grampanchayat of Tangarpali block in Sundargarh district, remains hidden within the embrace of the Reserve forest, its 45 families enduring the lack of recognition for over 75 years since independence.

With a population of 250, predominantly engaged in small-scale forestry and subsistence farming, the village’s existence is marred by the absence of official recognition and identity. Despite being part of nearby villages like Balijori, Telendihi, and Ratanpur, the villagers suffer from a sense of displacement and agony.

The Forest Right Recognition Act, meant to empower Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers since 2007, has eluded the villagers. Additionally, the allure of alcohol addiction among the youth, compounded by the village’s suburban location, adds to their challenges.

In June 2013, SEWAK (NGO), Rangiamunda, initiated efforts to secure Community Forest Rights and Community Forest Resource Rights across 670 villages in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. However, initial awareness meetings in San-Dhabakhol met with resistance until two women, Mrs. Bagh (Secretary) and Mrs. Sukamanani Oram (President), took charge.

These women rallied the village’s womenfolk, meticulously completing documentation, including Form ‘B’ and Form ‘C’, and engaging with relevant government departments. With perseverance, they convened village meetings with the Sarpanch’s support, culminating in a formal complaint to the Sub-Divisional Committee on 12th June 2021.

Their unwavering determination and leadership united the village women, leading to a significant milestone. Though initially oblivious, the men and youth have since recognized the importance of their efforts, joining hands for a brighter future.

San-Dhabakhol’s story underscores the transformative power of women’s leadership and collective action, illuminating a path towards recognition, empowerment, and a stronger community bond.
