From Struggle to Empowerment: The Transformation of Dungajore Village

From Struggle to Empowerment: The Transformation of Dungajore Village

Forests, often dubbed as the lungs of the earth, play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining life on our planet. However, the village of Dungajore, nestled within the Subdega block of Sundargarh district, initially grappled with the lack of awareness regarding their rights and the neglect of their economic sustainability by the forest department.

With a population of 403 spread across five hamlets, Dungajore faced hurdles in accessing natural resources and Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP). Despite being home to 196 males and 207 females belonging to Scheduled Tribes, the villagers were unaware of their entitlements.

Misunderstandings with the forest department further exacerbated their plight. While the department focused on planting Saguan trees, villagers advocated for the cultivation of medicinal and cash crop trees like Mango and Neem. Tensions escalated when the department resorted to burning villagers’ fields, prompting pleas for understanding and cooperation.

In the face of adversity, the NGO SEWAK emerged as a beacon of hope for the villagers of Dungajhor, Dungajore. Through educational initiatives, SEWAK empowered 135 families with knowledge about forest rights and authorities. A Forest Rights Committee (FRC) was subsequently formed, comprising ward members, Anganwadi workers, and villagers, ensuring representation and accountability.

The formation of the FRC marked a turning point for Dungajore. Armed with newfound awareness, villagers reclaimed their rights to access forests and protect them from human-induced hazards. This empowerment translated into self-reliance and self-sufficiency, paving the way for holistic development.

Regular Gram Sabha meetings, held twelve times a month, became platforms for active participation and collective decision-making. Villagers, now equipped with knowledge and confidence, voiced opinions and contributed to the village’s progress.

From a state of struggle and neglect, Dungajore emerged as a model of community empowerment and resilience. SEWAK’s intervention bridged the gap between ignorance and empowerment, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the village’s natural resources.

The journey of Dungajore village serves as a testament to the transformative power of education, advocacy, and collective action. By harnessing the potential of grassroots initiatives and community participation, Dungajore embarked on a trajectory of sustainable development and prosperity.
