Kunti Majhi’s Success with Ragi Cultivation

Kunti Majhi’s Success with Ragi Cultivation

Birkaldihi village, in Balisankara Block of Sundargarh district, Odisha, is a rural enclave surrounded by the Mashinanala Dam. Despite its remote location and lack of basic amenities, the villagers, primarily farmers, rely on agriculture and forest product collection for sustenance.

Among them is Kunti Majhi, a dedicated farmer with over 55 years of residence in Birkaldihi. With a family of four, including two children pursuing education, Kunti manages 5 acres of land, cultivating paddy, pulses, and vegetables. Last year, she seized the opportunity presented by the Millet Mission, facilitated by SEWAK, and decided to venture into Ragi cultivation on 1.2 acres of her land.

Recognizing the benefits of millet cultivation, particularly its lower water requirements and potentially higher profits compared to paddy, Kunti embraced the new endeavor with determination. With support from SEWAK and the Millet Mission, she received necessary assistance and resources, including a cycle weeder and tarpaulin, at affordable rates. This support bolstered her income and reduced unnecessary expenses.

Kunti’s hard work and efficiency yielded impressive results. She provided 4 quintals of millets to the market while retaining some for personal consumption. Her success serves as an inspiration for fellow farmers in the village and beyond. Grateful for the support received, Kunti expresses heartfelt appreciation to the Odisha Millet Mission and SEWAK for their ongoing assistance and guidance.

Looking ahead, Kunti is determined to further enhance her production in the upcoming season, leveraging the knowledge and resources provided by the Millet Mission initiative. Through her dedication and the support of empowering programs, Kunti exemplifies the potential for sustainable agriculture to uplift rural communities and improve livelihoods.
