Santosh Kujur’s Journey to Agricultural transformation

Santosh Kujur’s Journey to Agricultural transformation

Santosh Kujur, a small farmer from Nirabahal village in Sundargarh, Odisha, exemplifies the power of tradition and innovation in agriculture. Inheriting his passion for farming from his ancestors at the tender age of 19, Santosh embraced the responsibility of being the breadwinner for his family of six.

Through progressive farming techniques, Santosh elevated his modest farm to new heights of success. With 1 acre dedicated to chilli cultivation and another 2 acres producing various vegetables and cereals, he achieved a remarkable turnover of Rs. 85,000 from his chilli crop alone in the current season. His commitment to quality and dedication to hard work garnered recognition and appreciation from both the market and his peers.

Despite facing challenges, Santosh remained undeterred, relying on sheer determination and passion to overcome obstacles. The tragic loss of his father spurred him to seek support from the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Sundargarh. Through their assistance and guidance, Santosh gained access to valuable resources such as seeds, bio-NPK, and technical knowledge, paving the way for his success.

Under ITDA’s Mission Jeevika Scheme, Santosh received financial backing and invaluable farming education, including insights into hybrid chilli production. Impressed by the superior features of hybrid varieties, such as increased resistance to pests and diseases, longer shelf-life, and better taste, Santosh mastered the art of producing quality chillies.

In an impassioned plea to fellow youngsters in rural areas, Santosh urged them to reconsider abandoning their farming traditions in favor of urban migration. He highlighted the vital role of agriculture in supporting the Indian economy and emphasized the need to preserve and nurture this essential sector.

Santosh expressed heartfelt gratitude to ITDA, Sundargarh, FNGO SEWAK, and other departmental staff for their unwavering support and guidance. Their assistance not only uplifted his livelihood but also instilled a renewed sense of faith in the farming community.

Santosh Kujur’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative impact of determination, innovation, and support systems in agriculture. His story inspires hope and underscores the importance of preserving and advancing traditional farming practices for a sustainable and prosperous future.
