Thriving Together: A Cluster Approach to Groundnut Cultivation Success

Ground nut is the most extensively growing crop covering more than 500 acre land in this Athmallik block. 60 % of farm revenue comes from ground nut only. Under APC Project 2 PGs ( Producer Groups) were selected to grow Ground nut as their Major crop. Utkalika and BABA Baba Sidheswara PG.
PG Background
Utkalika PG comes under Kuteswara Village of Nagaon GP consisting of 93 members covering an area of 100 acres . Irrigation are done through canal water. Baba Sidheswara PG comes under Malipadara village of Purunamanitri GP , consisting of 78 members with an area of 80 acres.
Agronomic Practices
Seed showing done in 1st week of October. Seeds were supplied by Private bodies as farmers were not interested to purchase from Agriculture department as oil content of that seeds were high.
- Seed variety – Amravati
- Sowing time- 1ST week of October.
- Seed quantity /acre- 60 kg.
- Spacing- 25 x 10 inches
- Irrigation- Canal and Rain water.
- Seed Treatment– seed treatment done with Trichoderma 4 g/kg.
- Method of sowing – Ridge and furrow method of sowing.
- Inter cropping– Ground nut intercropped with Green gram and Mustard.
- Harvesting Time– Harvesting time started in 2nd week of February and completed by last week.
Cost of Cultivation
As we focused on reducing the cost of cultivation by reducing the fertilizer application and labour cost and mechanical cost. The average cost of cultivation in 1 acre is Rs. 21,500/-
Production/Yield
On an Average total 12 to 14 quintals of Ground nut are producing from 1 acre land.
Market Value
Our PG farmers are selling the ground nuts at Rs.5,000/ quintal to Dhenkanal, Angul market. Some times the rate is fluctuating between 4800 to 5200 per quintal.
Net Profit
Considering Rs. 5,000 INR/ Qtl. the average profit from 1 acre land is 38,500 INR.
